blah

Last month I finished school for hopefully the last time, completing my MA in English. So now I have two very expensive pieces of paper on the wall. And now I am going through what several other university graduates go through. I'm now trying to find a decent job that is somewhat related to my field. I had a glimmer of hope when I saw two advertisements for some Communications jobs, but I haven't heard anything from either of them. I applied for a position with the Regina Folk Festival but I would've heard from them by now since the job begins on Thursday. I was also counting on working on the crew for a movie being shot in town starting tomorrow but I haven't got any word for that either. I just applied for a customer service job with Westjet so we'll see what happens with that. And I've kept checking out the U of R website about any potential openings, but there are only openings for sessional lecturers starting this Spring. So it looks like I'll join the countless of overqualified bartenders/servers with BAs and MAs doing whatever they can to pay the bills until a "real" job comes up. All I know is that I absolutely will not go back to Safeway. I honestly don't know if I could look myself in the mirror if I had to ask "Would you like a hand out with that?" again. I really don't know how people can sit on their ass on welfare or EI for months on end. Besides working at The Pump one or two nights a week I've had nothing to do but tweak my resumes and cover letters and apply for jobs. After a while it really starts to bring a person down. I've just felt so down lately. And the fact that it's winter just magnifies it since it's not always nice to go for a walk and catch some fresh air. Right now I am going batty and I have to get a job, any job, for my own sanity. I can understand why some people get part time jobs when they retire because I can only stand to stay home so much. Well, I think I've vented enough. I guess life can't always be a cherry on a sundae. Blah.

The Tragically Hip

Last night April and I went to see The Tragically Hip perform at the Agridome...Oops...I guess it's called the Brandt Centre now. I won two tickets online from Muchmoremusic and we were really close to the stage. This was the third time I've seen The Hip perform and they once again put on a kickass show. The band members are fairly boring to watch, but Gordie Downie makes up for it with his effortlessly charismatic stage presence. With much respect to Robin Black and Bif Naked, Gordie Downie has to be the best frontman in Canada. He is like a cross between Michael Stipe and Stompin' Tom. I was really impressed by their newer songs like "In View" and "Yer Not the Ocean." They sounded great alongside the obvious hits like "New Orleans is Sinking" and "Ahead By a Century." It's only January but I've probably already seen the best show of the year.

Career-summing Movie Posters

While perusing the web, I came across some funny (and mostly true) movie parody posters starring some big name actors such as Kean-whoah Reeves.

random thoughts

Cedric the Entertainer... Doesn't one have to be entertaining to earn the title "entertainer"?

You would think that Muchmusic could air programs that are more recent than 4 years old. I hated Rick the Temp when he was live on the air. I don't need to see him on reruns.

Speaking of Muchmusic... You would think a station called MuchMUSIC could actually play MUSIC VIDEOS. Crazy thought, I know. Instead, all they air are shitty reality shows like House of Carters. Sometimes I wonder why I even have a television anymore.

Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame

Well, it's official. Today it was announced that R.E.M., along with Patti Smith, Van Halen, the Ronnettes and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five will be inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in March. It is pretty cool for R.E.M. to be inducted with one of their main heroes Patti Smith. I imagine they will perform "E-Bow the Letter" together and probably "People Have the Power." However,as cool as this is for me, it really makes me start to feel old when my favourite bands have been around for 25 years or longer. A couple years ago U2 got inducted, and the induction committee have finally been inducting bands from the punk era like the Ramones, the Clash, the Sex Pistols and now Patti Smith. I'm obviously not a big rap fan, but I think it is pretty cool to see the first rap artist being inducted. It will also be interesting to see how Van Halen handle being inducted since Eddie Van Halen despises both David Lee Roth and Sammy Haggar and booted Michael Anthony out of the band in favor of his 15 year old son.

Happy New Year!

New Years Eve has come and gone and I think my body is still recovering. Over the whole New Years weekend I was able to see most of my close friends, including Brandy and Trevor, Mark and Tessa, Jenn and Dwayne, Mr. Real, Kent, Zubazz, Jarrod and Chief and rest of the Pump crew, Jai Mo, Jeremy, Paul, etc. It was lots of fun doing the countdown at the stroke of midnight while hosting karaoke at The Pump. But as much fun as it was, it's kind of nice to relax and get back to reality for a while and keep on with the job hunt. Anyways, here are the pics. Thankfully, April and I only took pics at the beginning of the night because I don't even want to imagine how all of us looked by 7am!
